Research and Interests
I am a Registered Psychologist with a PhD in Counselling Psychology. I serve the Faculty of Education as one of the primary Clinical Supervisors in the Clinical Services area. My primary role is to provide training and supervision to Master and Doctoral students in the Counselling Psychology program. My doctoral research focused on examining the essential characteristics of highly effective therapists. I maintain an interest in psychotherapy process and outcomes research, particularly therapist and client factors, as well as the contextual model of psychotherapy. As well, I am broadly interested in clinical supervision.
With over sixteen years of experience in the counselling profession, I have worked in the areas of career development, personal growth and development, health psychology, and clinical supervision. I completed my doctoral residency in 2013-14 at the Cross Cancer Institute. Much of my professional practice work has focused on providing individual, group and couples counselling to adults. As well, I have frequently given invited public seminars on topics like "Living Well" - the application of the principles of positive psychology. I practice largely from a theoretically integrative stance, though I commonly utilize techniques from existential, humanistic, cognitive behavioural, mindfulness based/acceptance based, and emotion focused standpoints. I approach supervision from a largely developmental perspective while aiming to help students identify their own theoretical inclinations.
I am a member of the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP). I have also been a member of the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta for the past 6 years (PAA), including 3 years as a student board representative while a doctoral student. In addition, I am a board member for On Site Placement Services – a local non-profit organization providing employment supports to persons with disabilities.
